Executive Director

As 2016, draws to a close, Operation Smile Thailand would like to extend warm wishes for the upcoming year and thank you for your continuous support in helping to change the lives of those in need. We are looking to the 2017. Our first big event will be a medical mission in Mae Hong Son during February 20 - 24 where we expect to treat 80 patients at the Srisangwan Hospital.

In this e-newsletter, you can read about our successful medical mission in Nong Khai, performance of Bright Smiles and Happy Hearts project, volunteer activities of two of our Bright Smiles and Happy Hearts partners, a new Smile merchandise, Thin Thin Hlaing, a shy girl from Shan State, whose life has changed after receiving treatment from Operation Smile Thailand for a cleft lip and palate and student programs update.

Bright Smiles & Happy Hearts

Project Update as of Quarter 3

During the third quarter of 2016, the Bright Smiles & Happy Hearts Campaign made extensive progress in building the Comprehensive Cleft Care (CCC) network. In addition to holding a database workshop at Fang hospital and a network meeting in Nan, the network enabled 285 patients to benefit from the care service plan and another 215 to make appointments with doctors at Maharaj Nakhon Chiang Mai.

Corporate Partners: Volunteer Activities

Generous gifts from two of our partners, Dusit International and the Crown Property Bureau, helped ease the pre- and post-operation anxieties of our patients during two of Operation Smile Thailand’s recent medical missions. Dusit International donated paper crowns and fans made at a volunteer activity it hosted.

Speech Camp

Some 25 families attended a 3-day speech camp organized by Operation Smile Thailand on October 21 - 23, 2016 at the Surin Majestic Hotel, in Surin.

Patient Story

Thin Thin Hlaing

Learn how Operation Smile Thailand has changed the life of a 13-year-old girl from a remote village in the Shan State in Myanmar. Born with a cleft lip and cleft palate, the mother of Thin Thin Hlaing feared her daughter would live with these defects all her life, as her family lacked the resources to pay for the corrective surgery as well as had access to a facility that could carry out the procedure.

Student Program Update

Total 17 Smile Clubs in 2016 (6 new clubs), with the latest addition being Shrewsbury International School (as of October - November 2016)

Smile Carnival 2017

13 Smile Clubs to host the very first Smile 13 Smile Clubs to host the very first Smile Carnival on April 1, 2017 –Operation Smile. Student volunteers from 13 international schools in Bangkok participate in charity carnival to raise money for safe surgeries for children with facial deformities throughout Thailand. The venue and time of the Carnival is TBC.

Smile Club Fundraisers

All school fundraisers and events were postponed until end of November and December due to the King’s passing. WELLS: Wells International School held its annual Professional Development Day in September and used the event as the first fundraiser since becoming an established Smile Club member. The amount raised was approximately 8,000 baht.
